چکیده

The null genotype for glutathione S-transferase (GST, EC 2.5.1.18) gene polymorphisms is considered a risk factor for leukemia in different populations. In this work we investigated the GSTT1 and GSTM1 polymorphisms using multiplex PCR in 53 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), 23 with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) and 304 apparently healthy controls. In this association study we found that the GSTT1 genotype was more frequent in our group of APL patients than in the control group [OR = 2.75 (95% CI = 1.10-6.88)], providing evidence that a deletion in the GSTT1 gene could be a risk factor for this type of leukemia.

Investigation of the Relationship between Genetic Polymorphisms in GSTM1 and GSTT1 Genes and Susceptibility to Lung Functional Abnormalities in Workers Exposed to Air Pollutants at Isfahan Steel Plant

Introduction: Gaseous air pollutants can cause oxidative stress, which can lead to lung damage by inducing inflammation. Polymorphisms in the glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene are involved in the pathogenesis of many diseases, including lung disease. Two glutathione S-transferase Mu 1 (GSTM1) and glutathione S-transferase theta 1 (GSTT1) genes belong to this family, in which deletions occur ...

Genetic Polymorphism of the Glutathione S-Transferase M1 and Development of Breast Cancer

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are encoded by a superfamily of genes and play a role in the detoxification of potential carcinogens. The human GSTs are divided into four classes: alpha, mu, pi and theta. Previous studies indicated that the absence of the Glutathione S-Transferase M1 (GSTM1) protein correlated with an increased risk of developing some types of cancers. Association between spe...

Influence of the glutathione s-transferase gene polymorphisms on the susceptibility to basal cell skin carcinoma.

BACKGROUND The identification of groups at high risk is fundamental to determine preventive strategies for skin cancer. Destructive reactive oxygen species produced by UVA or chemical carcinogens are metabolized by a series of enzymes. Polymorphisms of genes encoding for these enzymes may produce defective proteins with a diminished ability to detoxify a wide range of carcinogens. AIMS To asc...

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTT1 and GSTM1) genes polymorphisms and the treatment response and prognosis in Chinese patients with de novo acute myeloid leukemia.

We investigated the prognostic significance of genetic polymorphism for glutathione S-transferase theta 1 (GSTT1) and glutathione S-transferase mu 1 (GSTM1) in 254 Chinese patients with de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) other than AML-M3. The early death rate after the initiation of chemotherapy was similar between the GSTT1+/GSTM1+ group and GSTT1-/GSTM1- group. The complete remission (CR) ...

Role of Glutathione S-Transferase M1 and T1 Gene Polymorphisms in Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia Susceptibility

Objectives: Authors aimed to investigate the association between GSTT1 and GSTM1 genetic polymorphism and susceptibility to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Materials and methods: Genotyping polymorphisms were studied in a total adult 178 individuals (88 newly diagnosed AML patients and 90 healthy controls) using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: Significant difference was report...
